ABSTRACT

A new semi-empirical calculation method is proposed, developed within the framework of the SUPERBIT research project, in order to obtain the maximum shear stress to which the interface between the bituminous layers of a road pavement can be subjected under the action of traffic. After analysing different load scenarios and the main factors affecting the stress distribution at a bituminous interface, the most unfavourable combinations were selected to determine the design stresses and compare them, in a consistent manner, with the shear strength required by article 531 of the Spanish Technical Specifications for Highways and Bridges PG-3, measured in accordance with test standard NLT-382. The results obtained seem to indicate that the specifications of the current Spanish technical requirements are adequate, and that it might even be appropriate, in some circumstances, to raise the established minimum values.
