ABSTRACT
This article analyzes safety rates of the Spanish crosstown roads during the period 2006-2015 and shows the difficulties of incorporating territorial and socioeconomic factors, as indicators to study the potential risk of this type of road. This type of roads, in which the “barrier effects” (community severance) manifest themselves in their maximum expression, are usually associated with small populations and rural environments with an aging population; and in Spain, they have suffered a rebound in accidents in recent years. Using as sample of the 1.405 accidents (with fatalities and serious injuries) occurred in the Spanish crosstown roads in the period 2006-2015, and segmenting the crossings with a latent cluster model, the authors highlight the importance of considering territorial and socioeconomic indicators, together with the infrastructure and traffic variables, when analyzing the safety risk of this type of road.
