ABSTRACT
The province of Pontevedra has a high density of population, widely dispersed and concentrated along the communication routes, which results in a high rate of road accidents. In 2013 the Diputación de Pontevedra (Provincial Council of Pontevedra) approved the Road Safety Ordinance, aimed at helping to reduce the rate of road accidents. The ordinance was focused on the roads that did not meet the minimum standards for road sections, with neither sidewalks nor spaces reserved for pedestrians, and for which there was hardly any regulation or guideline. Subsequently, based on the aforementioned ordinance, the “Decalogue of criteria for actions on the provincial roads”, the “Instructions to design road safety devices for provincial roads” and the “Action protocol for road safety projects in the network of provincial roads” were drafted and approved by the Diputación de Pontevedra.
