This article aims to explain the work carried out by the PROINTEC company in Ecuador for the evaluation of the safety of national roads, by performing what has been called road safety audits. A road safety audit is a procedure in which a team of independent and qualified professionals checks the safety conditions of an existing or future road, in order to identify deficiencies or omissions that may compromise the safety of users, and of which it can be justified that there are viable and potentially efficient alternative solutions.

In this line of work, the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works of Ecuador, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, carried out road safety audits on roads in service of the National Road Network at 2016. The objective was to identify the elements of the road that could cause an accident, and that could be the object of an action for its elimination or, at least, to reduce its probability and severity.

This article describes the development, the problem identified and the main results obtained in the audits carried out in the R5 and R6 regions.
