ABSTRACT

The experience has shown that approaches such as labelling and certification initiatives stimulate industry, strengthen innovation while using mechanisms for cost-effective results and promoting smart procurement.

In the labeling and certification of buildings, there are approaches such as BREEAM and LEED, and in terms of road infrastructure, tools have been developed such as CEEQUAL, GREENROADS, INVEST and ENVISION, or EPD © environmental labeling, among others. However, many of these systems do not consider all the pillars of sustainability or all phases of the infrastructure life cycle. In order to overcome these limitations and generate a complete system of sustainable road evaluation, the LCE4ROADS Certification system has been created.

This article summarizes some of the most widely used global sustainability certification and assessment systems; describes the certification system developed (LCE4ROADS) and explains the application of some of sustainable tools and certification systems.
