The systematic application of environmental management procedures facilitates the control of the environmental impact caused by a specific process or action. This paper proposes and illustrates its adoption in the field of public works from the drafting phase of the project, with the aim that administrations can promote more sustainable actions without compromising their economic and social profitability. The integration of different sustainability metrics, always based on the analysis of the life cycle of the work, allows a transparent evaluation of the results at different levels (especially: economic and environmental) and allows a consistent decision making at any moment of the process (adjudication, execution, maintenance ...).
