Increased capacity urban road incorporate additional lanes without increasing the platform

ABSTRACT
Congested highways and urban expressways often leads to the need to increase capacity by adding an additional lane. While executing this extension by widening the existing platform is always difficult and expensive, restructure and make the most of the existing platform, narrowing the lanes a little and converting part of the hard shoulder in area of ​​road traffic and reduce the width of the median if possible, can be a practical and efficient solution. This article examines this type of road performances, their influence on the functionality of traffic, its possible effects on road safety, in addition to its alterations in environmental conditions the environment. Finally it describes and analyzes a recent performance of expansion, comparing before and after characteristics with the effects produced.
