New test procedure for evaluating the tenacity of bituminous mixtures

In order to assess the tenacity of bituminous mixtures, the Laboratory of Roads Polytechnic University of Catalonia has developed a new direct tensile test applied to prismatic specimens. In this paper we analyzed the effect of bitumen type and temperature on the tenacity of mixtures by using this assay. For it has been manufactured a mixture S-20, fixed composition, using three types of binders: a conventional bitumen B-60 / 70 a polymer modified BM-3c and modified crumb rubber BM-pn bitumen bitumen. The tests were performed at different temperatures, from -10 to 40 ° C, trying to cover the range that are subject mixes the firm built in our country. The results indicate that the use of modified binders in such blends improves the fracture energy at extreme temperatures, depending on the type of modifier employed.
