ABSTRACT
The current shortage of natural resources and environmental requirements in the civil engineering suppose the search for new products and materials that are able to meet the technical needs of building road infrastructure within a framework of sustainable development.

The ashes from the combustion of coal burners in thermal power plants have suitable properties for use as filler in road construction, and even some of them significantly improve the bearing characteristics and compaction of many materials in a economic and environmental way.

In this article the results and conclusions of a characterization study conducted on ash from two Spanish power plants, located in the towns of Soto de Ribera and Aboño (Asturias, Spain), for possible application in the construction of embankments exposed and fillings roads.
