ABSTRACT
In recent years the number of variable message panels (VMPs) on roads has grown dramatically, Spain is one of the European countries with more investment in Intelligent Transport Systems and more PMV's installed.

Currently, technological development focused on increased welfare rejects energy waste and seeking respect for the environment, there is no discussion about the need to achieve maximum energy efficiency and rational use of resources. This article analyzes the different factors involved in the energy consumption of a Variable Message Panel and sets the technical criteria to design and manufacture PMV's with very low power consumption.
