More than 20.000 electric scooters, segways and hoverboards already circulate in Spain

The Spanish Road Association (AEC) has collaborated during the last year with the MAPFRE Foundation in the preparation of the study "New Personal Mobility Systems and their problems associated with Road Safety".

Among the main conclusions of the report, published by 17 in January, the following stand out: the urgency of regulatory developments to regulate its use, the interest of limiting circulation to 30 zones, the need to build a network of dedicated lanes, the establishment of compulsory insurance and the importance of safety equipment so that the so-called VMP (Personal Mobility Vehicles) can circulate with all the guarantees, both for its users and for the rest of road users in urban environments.

Currently circulating in Spain More than 20.000 vehicles of this type, of which approximately 5.000 are located in Madrid, according to figures from the Association of Users of Personal Mobility Vehicles (AUVMP). The majority of users (8 of each 10) recommends using them for the time and money saving that they generate, although they also point out some disadvantages as the existing legal uncertainty (7 of each 10 believes its regulation is necessary). They also underscore the insecurity that it produces. In this sense, the 17% of users of personal mobility vehicles admit to having suffered an incident, which in more than half of the cases (68%) did not cause injuries.

Danger and insecurity is the feeling that eight out of ten drivers and pedestrians have (82%) with respect to the circulation of Segways, electric scooters and hoverboards, personal mobility vehicles (VMP) with which one in ten admits to having suffered some mishap in the last year, reason why 92% consider it necessary to regulate their use as soon as possible.
