The road as an integral element of the Single European Sky, a debate in the Road Week XXIV

The XXIV Road Week will be held in Pamplona (Navarra), the 14 18 October to 2002

Highway as an integrator of the single European space, central topic of debate

The Department of Public Works, Transport and Communications of the Government of Navarra and the Spanish Road Association organize what will be the V National Meeting of the Highway

This is manifested both institutions in the collaboration agreement signed this morning in Pamplona

Madrid, April 19 2002.- Data collected in the Transport White Paper of the European Commission show that in 1998, the flow of goods between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe amounted to 144 million tonnes of 53% which was transported by road, 44% by sea and rail 3%.

Also, according to the Observatory Franco-Spanish trans-traffics, 15.000 trucks cross daily this massif at its two extremities to 11.000 -in front transiting between France and Switzerland to Italy-, and this figure is expected to increase at more 10% a year.

These data show that the competitiveness and the full development of the social and economic potential of our country pass through the incorporation of Spanish infrastructure networks to others, both rank as supra-community. And so we want to show in the new edition of the Week of the twenty-the Road Fourth-, to be held in Pamplona (Navarra) on the 14 18 2002 October.

The aim of the V National Highway, organized by the Spanish Road Association (AEC) sponsored by the Department of Public Works, Transport and Communications of the Government of Navarra, and the collaboration of the Ministry of Public Works, City Council Pamplona and Navarra Chamber of Commerce, is therefore to analyze the challenges of international collaboration in cross-border projects, and look for the keys to designing a new geography through roads.

The first step for this Congress will bring together experts from around the country and delegates from Morocco, Portugal and France, among others, it has given this morning, with the signing of a collaboration agreement between the Director of Department of Public Works, Transport and Communications of the Government of Navarra, José Ignacio Palacios, and the President of the Spanish Road Association, Victor Montes.

The suitability of Navarra to celebrate the new edition of the veteran and "Week of the Road" has been highlighted by the General Rapporteur of the meeting, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid Antonio Manuel López Corral: "This region, bordering France, suffers from a strongly negative border effect on its economy it is necessary to solve with the utmost urgency by road communications with high-capacity French neighboring regions ".
